ImagePrior to the Internet, the only goods that shops sold were mass produced goods. With the advent of the Internet, shops can sell pretty much what they want and niche shops can flourish online.

This idea also applies to books too. The shelf space in your local bookstore is limited so the proprietor has to appeal to the masses, whereas the shelf space at Amazon is pretty unlimited so they can carry pretty much any stock they need to suit any niche requirement, providing there is a market for it.

Long tail marketing relates to a distribution curve, illustrated below:

Image

The shops that sold mass produced goods were the short tail, the red part of the graph. The online era does away with these restrictions and allows businesses to market their goods and services to a far greater audience than the offline stores and businesses ever did. This is
illustrated by the yellow section of the graph.

Let’s put this into the context of gaming affiliates. We’re not selling books but we are selling gambling sites. We make our living from promoting these sites to potential poker, casino, bingo, bet or games players. A lot of our traffic comes from search engines so consequently we make our sites as search engine friendly as possible for the search terms that we’re interested in attracting customers by.

The search term “poker” is pretty difficult to rank highly on. The last time I looked there were 106 million results for it on Google. “online poker” has 22 million results which is further down the tail of the curve, whilst “play online poker” has 10 million results and “play online poker now” has 6.5 million results.

Although, at first glance, it may look as if targeting the word “poker” is the best option as there are so many more people interested in it, a searcher that entered poker is probably curious about it and may want to find a little more out about this wonderful past-time.

“Online poker” is a little better because you know that they’re interested in playing online, or at least finding a little more about it. “play online poker” is more targeted because they want to actually play poker instead of finding out about it, and “play online poker now” is a call to action.

People searching with the aim of finding somewhere to play poker now are obviously better prospects than someone who has a passing interest in poker in general.

Long tail is the way to go for gaming affiliates. If you spend your time and effort targeting traffic that wants what you’re offering then your life is going to be a lot easier and your business will be a lot more profitable.

If you’re interested in the long tail marketing idea in general and want to find out more about it, a great resource is the book of the same name by Chris Anderson, the executive editor of WIRED magazine.
