 Swedish online poker affiliates are being targeted by the Swedish tax authority for possible tax evasion. Skatteverket, the Swedish tax authority, has asked the countries ISPs for information on any individuals that are running any form of online business in Sweden.
Online poker revenues are not currently being targeted but the tax authority has confirmed that affiliates are, as it's a lot easier to prove that the earnings should be taxed in the affiliates country of residence and a lot harder to track down the online poker players. ISPs are legally obliged to share their confidential customer information with the tax authority in Sweden or they can face large fines for not co-operating. The information already being collected includes names, addresses, company registration numbers and Social Security numbers. This data is used in conjunction with the Xenon program (a web spider used to locate tax evasion) in Denmark, Canada, Austria, the Netherlands and the UK.
The income generated by online gaming affiliates should be taxed on top of their taxable income, which can be as high as 57% in Sweden. Any Swedish affiliates evading tax can be forced to pay five years worth of back taxes plus a penalty of up to 40% of the undeclared revenues.
